Meeting your spirit guide or guides can be an exciting experience. Most of them are just as anxious to get to know you. Although they have been a part of your life for longer than you realize, they have been working behind the scenes. Like the living, spirit guides enjoy recognition and acknowledgment. They are never intrusive, but they will go out of their way to help you learn who they are if you invite them to take a more active role in your life.
Contacting Your Spirit Guides
Here is an exercise to help familiarize you with your spirit guides. Before beginning, read it a few times so you can complete the steps while remaining in a meditative state.
- Make yourself comfortable in a place where you will not be distracted or interrupted.
- Imagine yourself surrounded by white light or enclosed in a white bubble.
- Slowly inhale through your nose and exhale out your mouth, taking three deep breaths. Imagine the first breath cleansing your body, the second opening your mind and the third freeing your spirit. Become receptive to the information which may be revealed.
- Focus on the thought, "I am one with God. I will find peace and serenity." (God being the one you honor in your belief system or choice.) Set an intent to meet your spirit guide.
- Picture yourself sitting on a bench in a beautiful park. Smell the trees and flowers and feel a gentle breeze. Notice how peaceful and calm the scenery is.
- Relax into the setting until you feel your spirit guide approach. When you feel their presence, invite him or her to join you.
- Use your spiritual senses to communicate with your guide. Ask your guide to share any information he or she wishes you to know.
- When your spirit guide is ready to leave, thank him or her for visiting, say good-bye and find peace in the knowledge that you can and will meet again.
- As your guide departs, use your senses to smell the fresh air, hear the birds and observe the flowers and trees. Feel yourself slowly rise form the bench, leave the park and return to your physical location.
- Become aware of your breathing as you feel yourself move back into your body. When you feel ready, move your arms and legs and open your eyes.
Don't become discouraged if you do not immediately make contact with your spirit guide. Meditation is a skill which requires patience and practice. Repeat this exercise as often as you wish. Eventually, you will establish a connection with your guide.
Although your spirit guide may make you feel safe, do not rely on him or her to protect you in dangerous situations. Spirits exist to teach life lessons, not prevent the consequences of risky behavior. Your safety will always remain your responsibility.
Your spirit guides are always available to provide counseling and direction. With practice, you can contact them and benefit from their guidance on a regular basis.
